Our day trip from Fes to Chefchaouen is one of the bestseller trips. The blue city or the blue pearl is an incredible gem in Northern Morocco. A must visit place, that is a feast for the eyes. The atmosphere is calm and charming, the medina is like a breath of fresh air, and the inhabitants are extremely proud of their home and welcome you graciously.
Leave Fes at 08:00 am, take a scenic drive over the Rif mountains. These mountains have for centuries been influenced by Spain, as an Andalusian style of architecture in the towns, a common fluency in Spanish and foods such as paella, tortilla and tapas all testify. After four hours of drive, you will be welcomed by the blue color of Chefchaouen.
Chefchaouenis one of Morocco's most delightful towns. It is a popular stop in the Rif region, famous for its achingly pretty bright-blue-washed medina, with narrow winding cobbled streets punctuated by artisanal shops, miniature cafés, little pensions and festooned with trailing clematis and bougainvillea. Women wear the white, rather than black, haik (unless they are in mourning when the reverse is true). In the summer Chefchaouen is cool and in winter it can be blanketed with snow.
Historically, Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 as a small kasbah (fortress) by Moulay Ali Ibnou Rachid. Many Moriscos and Jews settled here after the Spanish inquisition. So, you might feel like you're in the hills of Spain. After making it to the town, you'll take a guided tour to explore the city and the narrow streets of the surrounding neighborhood, before you stop for lunch in a family house. Early afternoon, you may hike to the Spanish mosque for a general view of the city, later, you meet your driver and drive back to Fes.
